Self-awareness is one of the greatest tools in finding a job and excelling in a career. Increasing your hireability can be as simple as looking inward and determining what your tendencies are in the workplace, and then following up on anything that needs to be tweaked or improved. If you feel that you are weak in any of the following areas, be sure to determine what the problem is and make a plan to strengthen your capabilities there.
1. Mastering your job
Do you feel that you are fluent in the knowledge that is imperative in making you invaluable to your company and co-workers? Do you continue to seek educational opportunities that ensure your mastery of the job you have–or for the job that you aspire to? Do you know how you are being evaluated, and how your evaluations compare to those of your co-workers? Do you know how your department is being measured for progress, and how you can make a direct contribution to that measurable progress?
2. Communicating with superiors
Are you aware of your boss’ priorities, and why those priorities are ordered the way they are? Do you know how to communicate those priorities to others, explaining how you can exemplify them? Are you able to answer which is of greater importance to your boss: people, concepts or progress? Do you support your superiors’ career aspirations in conjunction with your own?
3. Cultural competency
Do you know what your company’s mission statement is? Do you believe in it? Do you believe that you are capable of–and willing to–making a contribution to the greater vision of your superiors and owners? Do you feel good about growing with your company?
4. Judgment and resources
How resourceful are you? If your boss asked you to handle your office or department for the day, would you know where to start? Do you participate in networking opportunities, making relationships that can benefit your company or projects?
Continual self-evaluation and improvement is vital for a successful, fulfilling career. If you notice that you are weak in any of these areas, figure out how to strengthen the appropriate area and create a plan to build up these skills.
