A job seeker who is confident that they are a top candidate for a position, oftentimes wonders why they didn’t get the job. If you are confident that your resume, interview presence, soft skills and experience are all on point, you may be wondering what you could be doing differently or better to increase your chances of being offered a position.
However, you might consider that there are several reasons that are out of your control that prevent employers from extending offers.
- Culture clash. It’s entirely possible that your qualifications are undeniable, but you and the company are simply not a good match in terms of the company’s culture. If this is the case, you might even be grateful; working for a company with which you don’t “click” can be a miserable experience, and if that is evident at the outset, it’s best that your time wasn’t wasted.
- Stiff competition. Believe it or not, it is possible that there really were two or three other candidates who were exactly as qualified, poised, charming, and enthusiastic. Simply remember that you are one of the top contenders and that you will be a top contender again with continued effort and resilience. If you feel the need to bolster your resume and image, consider joining a professionals group, attending some continuing education courses in your field, or volunteering.
- You’re overqualified. Companies are not willing to risk hiring overqualified candidates because they are concerned that they will either be too expensive to hire, will leave the company at the first mention of a better or more appropriate offer, or will quit because they are unhappy in a position that is not challenging or fulfilling.
Interviewing with companies and not receiving offers can be frustrating. Remember that there are many reasons you might not be offered positions and not all of them are within your control. If possible, try to develop enough of a relationship with your interviewer throughout the process that you can politely and respectfully ask what the reasons were for going a different direction.
