Digging deep and breaking new ground on projects is an exciting and bold way to take calculated risks and grow your business. However, if you are unable to achieve these new heights with your current staff, or the sum of its parts are not quite enough to carry you through to the finish line, you may consider supplementing your staff with temporary or contract hires.

Consider the following tips for using short-term staff to add to your existing team:

  • Partner with an expert. Work with a recruiter to create an outline of the type of position you need. Determine what goals you are seeking to accomplish, and share your vision with your recruiter. They will be able to identify the exact type of employee you are in need of and recruit more strategically on your behalf. Recruiters have deep talent pools and can help you to locate top talent quickly. Once they have identified qualified applicants and vetted them, you will be able to interview and then hire the talent necessary for specific projects or phases of projects.
  • Make quick hiring decisions. Temporary workers are oftentimes looking to start a position immediately. So, if they are extended an offer for a position they applied to, these workers may accept rather than wait for other companies to take their time making hiring decisions. Taking a long time to make hiring decisions may cost you the opportunity to hire top talent.
  • Offer perks. Talk with your staffing firm about the traditional benefits they could offer to your temporary employees. Top staffing firms understand they will be able to attract and retain qualified employees if they offer generous benefits to their workforce so they are in a position to help them. Wood Staffing’s employee benefits program includes paid time off; 401(k); medical, dental, and vision health insurance; term life insurance; and short-term disability coverage to eligible employees.

Also, consider offering temporary employees other perks to make them feel appreciated. Try achievement-based bonuses, a short-term gym membership, or other small benefits that make them feel valued.

  • Transfer knowledge. Consider asking your short-term staff to help educate full-time staff on new skills. Your existing team will benefit from an expansion of their skills and you may find that with a little instruction, there may be some superstars hiding amongst your current employees!
  • Retain the talent. If your temporary employee has been a great fit and they have exceeded expectations, talk to your staffing firm about your temp-to-hire options for retaining this employee. Not only will you permanently bridge your talent gap, you also had the opportunity to see if they were a good fit before adding them as a long-term employee.

If you are holding back on tackling bigger, better projects because there is a talent gap in your office, don’t delay–contact Wood Staffing today to begin locating qualified temporary talent!
