Creating a solid online job search strategy should a top priority when looking for a new job. Employers and recruiting firms use the Internet to reach top candidates and post available positions, so it is important that you have a comprehensive strategy in place to find (and apply to) great positions. Every job search strategy is unique to each candidate, but tapping your online network, creating a dynamite online presence, and leveraging online information are key factors to start with.

Online presence.  Craft an online presence that is professional and up-to-date. Clean up your Facebook profile or lock it down with privacy controls. Create a profile on LinkedIn and keep it updated by adding any new accomplishments and sharing informative articles.

Participate in LinkedIn Groups in your field and expand your network by inviting people you know to join you. Follow companies that interest you on LinkedIn and Twitter and like their pages on Facebook.

If appropriate for your field, consider creating a website or online portfolio so you can easily be found by employers when they Google you. There are a variety of free or inexpensive sites that can walk you through creating a simple page. Make sure that your email address is professional, using your name (rather than something like littleprincess123@xyz.com).

Online network.  Knowing someone may not get you a job, but it can help you to get your foot in the door. Take a look at your online connections on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. See who you know who works for companies that you are interested in and let them know you are open to new opportunities. Pay special attention to acquaintances who work in fields that have access to job openings like HR or recruiting.

Online information. Take advantage of the wealth of information available on the internet to research companies and search for jobs. Set up job alerts on job sites to be notified of new openings that fit your skills. Some sites even have a mobile app where you can search and apply for jobs and receive alerts on the run.

Examine company sites carefully to find out everything you can about them. Identify target companies to watch and be sure to thoroughly research any companies that call you for an interview. Don’t forget to check their news/press release page for the latest on business initiatives and accomplishments.

Set up a system to track your progress. Job hunting can be confusing and it’s important to keep track of where you have applied, who you spoke to and when you plan to follow up. It could be as simple and an excel spreadsheet or if you are a little more tech savvy, try a site like Evernote, where you can store information about companies you applied to, contacts you’ve made, even copies of your resume or portfolio.
