It’s important to know that not every bad job interviews should be taken as a red flag. For many candidates, job interviews are beyond stressful. The need to formulate the perfect responses to questions and try to impress a variety of new people can cause even the most talented candidates to succumb under pressure. A person may seem like a bad candidate at the onset, but it’s always wise to dig a little deeper.

Three Ways to Tell a Good Hire vs. a Bad Hire

There’s a huge difference between a bad candidate and a great candidate with poor interview skills. It’s important to know the difference so you don’t inadvertently pass up someone with great potential.

If you recently conducted a less-than-stellar job interview, use the following three techniques to determine whether or not to give the candidate a second chance:

  • Evaluate their Level of Professionalism. Candidates who show up on time, dress professionally and bring extra copies of their resume want to impress you. They’ve taken the time to prepare for the interview and genuinely want the job. Conversely, anyone who shows up late, is casually dressed and appears completely unprepared clearly does not respect the opportunity to be considered for your open position.
  • Assess their Attitude. Did the candidate speak positively about their previous employers and have a great attitude about the job? If not, move on. You don’t want to hire someone with a negative outlook who will bring your team down. Anyone who focuses on what they don’t want to do ─ rather than taking the approach of a team player ─ will not be an asset to your organization.
  • Consider their Knowledge of Your Organization. There’s a very distinct difference between just wanting a job and wanting a job at your specific company. Consider how much the candidate knew about your products and services, company history and philosophy. A person who goes into an interview knowing nothing about the company or doesn’t ask questions to learn more about it may not be truly interested in working for you. Whereas, a well-informed candidate has clearly taken the time to research your organization and asks probing questions to gain more insight and genuinely seems to want to work for you.
