The current political climate is more divided than it has been in years — or possibly ever before. More so than usual, politics have taken center stage on television, the internet and in conversation. Everyone has an opinion on political initiatives taking shape and the future of the country, but one place this topic of discussion should always be off limits is the office.

While tempting, it’s important to disengage yourself from all political discourse with colleagues — at least in the office. Even if you agree with someone’s stance, venturing down that path is never a good idea.

4 Reasons Not to Mix Politics and Work

It Creates a Divide

Politics can create a deep rift between those with opposing views. This can’t happen when you need to work harmoniously with everyone on your team. You might be able to put your personal feelings aside and work with someone who has very different political beliefs, but the same can’t be said for everyone.

Political Talk is Distracting

Your day is busy enough without throwing political discussions into the mix. One little comment can easily turn into a long discussion that keeps you from the pile of work on your desk. The last thing you want is to have to work late because you spent a good portion of the day engaged in a heated political debate with colleagues.

You Could Put Your Job in Jeopardy

Some people are very passionate about politics. If your boss is on the other side of the fence, voicing your opposing beliefs around the office could lead to a tense situation. Everyone handles these things differently, but if your manager is unable to behave like a professional, this could really take a toll on your relationship — and your future with the company.

Clients Could Overhear the Discourse

If you work in a space visited by clients, you run the risk of having them overhear your political banter. Those who don’t agree with the direction of the conversation may become offended and decide to take their business elsewhere. Keep your client base intact by internalizing your thoughts on politics during the work day.
