It’s been a while since you decided your current job no longer fulfills you, but you still haven’t done anything about it. Sure, you’ve browsed a few job postings and thought about updating your resume, but that’s about it.

Chances are, you’ve been procrastinating your search under the false pretense you’re too busy, but the real reason is you’re scared. Whether you’re nervous because you haven’t been in your current position very long or the exact opposite, it’s time to face your fears.

Fear #1: You Hate Job Interviews

Only a few people actually enjoy job interviews, so you’re not alone. However, you have to endure them to take the next step in your career. It’s hard to be nervous for something you’re prepared to handle, so start overcoming this fear by practicing responses to common interview questions. When you feel a little more confident, ask a friend or family member to step in as your interviewer for a few practice rounds.

Before long, you’ll be ready to face a hiring manager for the real thing. Take the pressure off yourself by realizing and accepting you’ll make mistakes during the interview. Striving for perfection will only cause you to feel more nervous, so consider each interview a learning experience.

Fear #2: You’re Afraid You Won’t Find Anything

It’s nerve-wracking to think your perfect job might not be out there, but you’ll never know if you don’t try. In fact, your dream company might be trying to fill your ideal position right now, but someone else will get it if you don’t step up. Get past this fear by acknowledging you might not find a position that checks all your boxes immediately, but vowing not to give up until you do.

Fear #3: You’re Nervous About Fitting in at a New Company

You might not be crazy about the dynamic of your current team, but you’re comfortable there. Admittedly, the unknown is scary, so it’s intimidating to think about having to start over with all new colleagues. Cultural fit is the key indicator of your success at a new job, so research every company prior to applying. There isn’t a sure way to know if you’ll fit in, but the company’s social media presence, blog and online reviews should help you feel more comfortable.

Fear #4: You’re Scared of Rejection

When you really want a job, it feels bad to be passed up for someone else. The thing is, rejection isn’t always bad. It typically takes at least a few tries to find the right fit. In the meantime, you get to sharpen your interview skills and gain a better sense of what you really want from an employer. Instead of shying away from rejection, embrace it, and let it make you an even better candidate.
