Finding the right person for the job can be tough because sometimes, there’s more than one great contender. Having to choose between multiple promising candidates certainly isn’t the worst managerial problem you’ll face, but that doesn’t make it any easier.
What you might not realize is candidates not selected for one particular opportunity might be the perfect fit for another down the road. Staying in touch allows you to stay on their radar — and vice versa — increasing the odds you’ll reconnect in the future.
After informing top contenders they weren’t selected this time, ask if you can stay in touch. If they agree, use one — or all — of the following methods to keep the relationship going.
3 Ways to Stay in Touch With Past Applicants
Connect on Social Media
Social networking sites like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook are a fantastic way to keep up with candidates. Ask what their preferred platform is for business, then send a request to connect or follow them. Their profile and status updates will make it easy to track their career, so you can stay on top of the kind of job openings they might be interested in. If something becomes available you think would be of interest, send them a private message.
Invite Them to Company Events
Maintain a rapport with former candidates by including them in larger company events. For example, if your company is hosting an open house, send them a personal invitation. Face-to-face networking will allow them to get acquainted with even more of the team and develop deeper bonds with those they already know. Seeing them interact with your staff will either reaffirm their fit for your culture or help you spot red flags you previously missed.
Put Them on Your Mailing List
If your company has an email newsletter, putting former candidates on the list will keep your brand on their mind. Make it interesting by offering industry insights and sharing highlights of exciting projects your team is working on. When you’re hiring, include links to job postings, so it’s easy for them to see what you have to offer.
