As policies and procedures are updated, you need to make sure people understand the changes and are adhering to them. Here’s some advice to keep your employees safe at work. 

5 Ways to Make Safety a Priority 

Clearly Communicate All Changes 

Make new policies and procedures a big deal. When they’re instituted, gather the team to announce the changes. Simply sending an email or posting an announcement in the breakroom doesn’t cut it, because many people won’t read it or understand its significance. It’s also important to provide training on any new rules, so everyone is on the same page. 

Provide Periodic Training 

Training employees on new policies and procedures is a must, but don’t stop there. Providing ongoing training to the entire team keeps important rules fresh in everyone’s mind. Making this an annual or semi-annual initiative can seriously limit injuries and illnesses.  

Lead by Example 

Employees look to you for guidance, so use your place in the spotlight to promote safety. Always follow your own safety rules because people are watching. If you don’t do things the right way, they certainly won’t either. As the boss, you set the tone for employee behavior, so always be mindful of your actions. 

Encourage Employee Suggestions 

As the people actually doing the work, no one has better safety insights than your employees. Take advantage of this by asking for their input on ways to improve workplace safety. They’ll likely have ideas you never thought of, making this a great way to cover all the bases. 

Be Present 

It’s hard to regulate safety matters from your corner office. Take an active part in employee safety by having a frequent presence on the work floor. Recognize employees who are following proper protocol and kindly correct those who are not. Knowing you’re watching will make people more cognizant of their behavior.
