Let’s face it  your boss is the worst. You work hard to please them, but no matter what you do, it’s never enough.

Despite your frustrations, you like the job itself and the company, so you don’t want to quit. Therefore, you’re hoping to find common ground to make your workdays more pleasant.

You’re ready to meet with your boss to discuss how they treat you but you’re afraid doing so will get you fired. Here’s some advice to increase your chances of gaining a positive outcome.

3 Effective Ways to Confront a Terrible Boss

Time It Right

Set yourself up for success by timing the conversation to your advantage. For example, if your boss is crazy busy with a project due next week, wait until afterward to have this discussion.

Having a challenging conversation with a difficult person is hard enough without doing so at a time they’re already stressed, tired, or cranky. By choosing a time when they’re typically at their best you increase your chances of having your words truly resonate.

Maintain an Upbeat Tone

It should go without saying that talking in a negative manner to your boss will not go over well  especially one who doesn’t appear particularly fond of you. Keep the tone of the conversation as positive as possible by thanking them for meeting with you and making it clear you aim to please them. Let them know your goal from the meeting is to figure out how to work together better, so you can accomplish as much as possible.

Focus on Specific Behaviors

Simply telling your boss they have a negative attitude or treat you poorly will immediately put them on the defensive. Instead, it’s best to provide specific examples of problematic behaviors. Hearing your side of the situation will give them a fresh perspective they might not have previously considered.

Regardless, this technique is effective because it focuses on their actions instead of their personality. Rather than making them feel attacked, you’re just explaining how some of their behaviors impact you.
