When interviewing candidates for a position on your team, you discovered one you really like was recently fired. This of course raised a red flag, as you don’t want to hire a bad employee  but don’t jump to conclusions.

If the person voluntarily divulged this information, spoke kindly of their former employer, and explained what they learned from the situation, it might not be necessary to disqualify them. Employees are fired for all kinds of reasons, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be an amazing fit somewhere else.

Here’s why you should consider hiring the person  after checking their references, of course  if you feel like they’re the right choice for your team.

3 Reasons to Hire Someone Who Was Fired

Some Bosses Are Truly Awful

You take pride in being kind to your employees and treating them fairly, but every manager doesn’t use this approach. It’s possible the candidate had a truly terrible boss who didn’t give them a fair chance to succeed.

Whether they were fired for making a mistake, had unreasonable demands placed upon them, or were simply disliked by their boss  for reasons not their fault  it’s possible their manager was just horrible. The candidate shouldn’t have to struggle to find a new job, just because they happened to get a bad boss.

Cultural Fit is Key

Hiring for cultural fit is a must, but unfortunately, every manager doesn’t see it that way. The candidate might’ve been fired, because they just weren’t the right choice for the company culture.

This isn’t a poor reflection of them as a person or employee, because different people thrive in different settings. As long as you feel confident they’re a good fit for your culture, they deserve the chance to prove themselves.

People Are Grateful for a Second Chance

No one is perfect. A truly hardworking candidate who had a tough time at a previous job will likely be extra motivated to succeed at your company.

Knowing they’ve been given a second chance will motivate them to go the extra mile to succeed in the role. This might mean they turn out to be the best employee you’ve ever had.
