Let’s face it — you’re swamped at work and you’re not sure how to handle it. The last thing you want is to admit you need help solving a certain issue or completing a project on time, but something has to give.

You’ve tried everything to get caught up, but you realize you’re going to need help from at least one other person. If you’re feeling nervous about asking your boss or co-workers for assistance, here’s some advice to help you:

4 Tips to Seek Help When You’re Behind at Work

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask

There’s no shame in needing a little help at work. At some point — and probably on multiple occasions — everyone has been in your shoes, so don’t beat yourself up about it. Chances are, your peers will be more than happy to assist because they know you’ll do the same the next time they need a helping hand.

Prepare a List of What You Need

When you’re nervous it can be hard to focus. Making a list of the items you need help with will allow you to stay organized and ensure you cover all the bases. Whether you need someone to show you how to get past a glitch in a software program or to complete a few tasks for you, this will make it easy to make sure nothing slips through the cracks.

Show Appreciation

Your colleagues chose to help you, but they’re not obligated to do so. Make sure they know how much you appreciate their assistance by showing gratitude. Accomplish this by saying “thank you” on a regular basis and maybe buying them lunch or taking them out for coffee. People want to help co-workers they like, who genuinely appreciate their efforts.

Learn From Your Mistakes

It’s possible you needed to ask for help because you were simply assigned too much work. However, poor time management or a lack of understanding of a certain task could also be the cause, so try to grow from this experience. Instead of considering it a failure on your part, think of it as an opportunity to learn and improve for next time.
