Interviewing for a new job is a big deal, so it’s always disappointing when the timeline you were given for an update comes and goes without a word. Feeling like you’re stuck in limbo is frustrating because you don’t know if you’re still in the running or if you need to move on.

The last thing you want to do is pester the hiring manager, but you have a right to know where you stand. Here’s some advice to help you attempt to solve this mystery gracefully.

4 Steps to Take When You Don’t Hear Back From a Job Interview

Reach Out to the Hiring Manager

If the timeline you were given has passed — by at least a few days — it’s perfectly acceptable to email the hiring manager. Politely reiterate your fit for the position and your continued interest in it. Let them know you just wanted to check in to see if a hiring decision has been made. This will put you on their mind without making you appear pushy.

Carefully Gauge Their Reaction

Hopefully the hiring manager will promptly respond to your email so you’re not kept in the dark. Allow their response to guide your future communications with them. If you receive a brief reply with a curt undertone, take this as a sign you’re probably not getting the job. However, if the reply is warm, friendly, and informative, there’s a good chance you’re still in the running.

Try Not to Take It Personally

Getting rejected for a job doesn’t feel great — especially when you’re essentially ghosted. This can easily take a toll on your self-esteem, but try not to let it get under your skin. You’re definitely not the only person who applied for the job who was treated in this manner, so you’re not the problem. The hiring manager is clearly in the wrong; you’re likely better off not having to work for someone so rude.

Think Twice About Applying Again

When you really want to work for a certain company, it can be tempting to try for a job again the next time a similar position is posted. However, If you would be working for the same person that treated you poorly the first time around, you might want to reconsider. Not having the courtesy to let you know you didn’t get the job is just plain rude. You don’t want to work for someone like that.
